Irish Rap Group Kneecap Apologizes to Families of Slain British Politicians Amid Backlash

Controversial Remarks and Counter-Terrorism Review

Footage from a November 2023 Kneecap concert showed a member declaring, *”The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP,”* prompting counter-terrorism police to review the incident. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch demanded legal action, while Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s spokesperson condemned the comments as “completely unacceptable” and confirmed the group would no longer receive public funding.

Kneecap’s Defense and Apology

In a statement, Kneecap rejected accusations of inciting violence, calling the circulated footage “deliberately taken out of all context.” They apologized directly to the families of Sir David Amess and Jo Cox, stating: *”We never intended to cause you hurt.”* Sir David Amess’s daughter, Katie Amess, criticized the group’s “dangerous, violent rhetoric” as “gobsmacking.”

Investigation into Pro-Hamas Chant

Authorities are reviewing a separate London concert video where a member allegedly chanted *”up Hamas, up Hezbollah.”* Kneecap denied supporting the banned organizations, asserting: *”We condemn all attacks on civilians, always.”* Irish Taoiseach Micháel Martin urged clarity, while DUP leader Gavin Robinson denounced their actions as a “hatefest.”

Calls for Festival Removal and Political Condemnation

Scottish First Minister John Swinney and multiple MPs called for Kneecap’s removal from upcoming music festivals, citing concerns over incitement. Festival organizers have not yet responded. No charges have been filed against the group.
